Brief stays for Tacko and Tremont in Boston: The long-and-short of it

Tacko Fall went undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft and Tremont Waters went in the second round, 51st overall. Tacko, at 7'5" and Tremont at 5'10" had a tough climb from the start, particularly with Boston Celtics. Coach, Brad Stevens,  having a clear preference for mid-sized wings, and that restriction alone meant neither player would last long in Beantown. Tacko was simply too big and slow for today's NBA game, whereas he may have had a much-easier time making it a few decades ago. Conversely, Waters, at 175 pounds, faced constant mismatches defending bigger players. Wish he Tacko) played somewhere between 1980 and 2000. Would've had a successful and impactful career! — Frosty Bias (@frostybias) September 1, 2021 That, unfortunately for Tacko and Tremont, is the long-and-short of it - too much of an uphill climb with size-related issues. Fall is off to join the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Waters remains a free agent. Best wishes go with both of them

Celtics need to find a slot for Tremont Waters next season

I am not writing this accolade for Tremont Waters based solely on his solid performance versus the Knicks yesterday, although it does play a role. In the Celtics 96-92 loss, and despite a few miscues early (3 turnovers), Waters contributed 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and a team-high plus minus of +20 . He is the pass-first backup point guard that The Green needs. Granted, he would most-likely be the second PG off the bench behind Payton Pritchard , but Payton has shown to be more of a scorer than facilitator. Tremont's per-36-minutes stats reveal 9.4 assists per game, along with 2.3 steals/game and a 94.1 % accuracy on free throws. He leads the team in all three categories on a 36-minute basis .  One other point. Opponents can't leave the 5'10" guard alone past the 3-point line. He hits roughly 40% (.395) of the long balls, and Tre' was 3-of-8 on treys yesterday .  This off-season will be a time of significant change for the Boston Celtics, and ri...

Celtics untapped talent pool - trade or development? Maybe a bit of both.

Many unknowns surround the Celtics young-and-untapped talent pool. Think about this! We have started to see rookie Aaron Nesmith emerge in the past two games, both wins for Boston. In the two contests, Nesmith logged a combined 35 minutes and scored 20 points on 7-of-11 (64%) from the field and 6-of-10 from 3-point land (60%). The 14th-overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft  also managed seven rebounds over the 2-game span and received some accolades on his defensive effort. There may be more to Aaron's game than sniper-level marksmanship. He has looked poised (and been productive) since he first stepped on the parquet. Despite lacking elite athleticism, he is quick, decisive - and has terrific body control. He looks more like a 3-year vet than a raw, first-year guy taken late (26th) in...

Celtics may be down to a skeleton crew versus Miami tonight

8-player, League minimum may be a problem It may be a stretch for the Boston Celtics to dress the League-minimum of eight players for tonight's game against the Miami Heat. As of this writing, The Green have only eight players listed as "available" for the contest. They are: Carsen Edwards Tacko Fall Aaron Nesmith Payton Pritchard Marcus Smart Jeff Teague Daniel Theis Tremont Waters Jayson Tatum, previously reported out of action for 10-14 days for COVID protocol, is now listed as "doubtful". Jaylen Brown is down as "questionable", as are Semi Ojeleye and Javonte Green. Kemba Walker and Romeo Langford are still idle while they recover from injuries, while Tristan Thompson, Rob Williams and Grant Williams are still "out" via COVID-19 protocols. How about Miami? Meyers Leonard is down as "game time decision" with a neck strain. That seems to be their sole casualty, but with COVID lurking in the background, these decisions become virtu...

NBA teams may be able to dress 15 players for games, instead of 13

The NBA potentially is raising the number of players dressed for action in League games from 13 to 15. Rosters, thus far, remain at 15 players, but rules can change minute-to-minute in these times. Sources: The NBA Competition Committee has unanimously recommended to expand the active roster list from dressing 13 players to 15 for games in upcoming season. The Board of Governors are slated to meet Dec. 17 to approve the change. — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) December 12, 2020 The Celtics currently have 17 players on their roster with #18 slated to be Amile Jefferson on an Exhibit 10 contract. Two of the 17 (Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters) are on 2-way deals. The Celtics G League affiliate Maine Red Claws will not be playing this season, but 2-way players can participate in 50 of the 72 regular-season games scheduled. The Maine Red Claws opted out of the season so any playing time they get will have to come from playing with the Celtics. — Christopher Landers (@armchairgminNH) Decembe...

Let the kids play tonight. There may be no alternative.

With the Celtics playing the tail end of a back-to-back tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers, and looking very much like a walking emergency room, Brad Stevens may have no choice but to play the youngsters. Kemba Walker (rest), Gordon Hayward (knee), Jayson Tatum (cold), Marcus Smart (possible suspension) and Jaylen Brown (hamstring) are either out, questionable or doubtful for this evening's contest, although nothing has been announced about action against Marcus for his tirade last night. It just may end up being Daniel Theis and a cast of kids facing the Cavs. That may not be so bad. I personally would love to see a Carsen Edwards-Tremont Waters backcourt for at least part of the game. Both have excelled at the G League level. Romeo Langford has shown flashes as a defensive stopper in his limited minutes on the floor as a Celtic, and Grant Williams, Javonte Green and Semi Ojeleye would fill out the gang of Young Guns. In addition to Theis, the "old codgers" for...

Rookie Tremont Waters makes things happen on the court

Celtics rookie Tremont Waters took to the court for only seven minutes in the Celtics 99-94 loss to the Wizards last night, but he made the most of them. He put up eight points and assisted on a Grant Williams' 3-pointer. The youngster just knows how to get opponents off balance in order to get to the hoop and score. He almost always seems to be in control. “Tremont is just a bucket-getter ... When you put him in the game, he’s always looking to make something happen, and usually he does.” On a night when our offense struggled, rookie Tremont Waters proved to be a bright spot. https://t.co/SpNe0VO6nI — Boston Celtics (@celtics) January 7, 2020 Waters is perfectly capable of hitting the long ball, but he often takes the hard road - driving into the pack to put up a shot attempt or get the ball to a teammate. He can be difficult to stop ( per NBA's Taylor Snow ): Waters scored six points during the final 4:30 of the third frame, which helped Boston to cut a seven-point de...

Grant Williams is a keeper for the Boston Celtics

Kudos to Celtics rookies Grant Williams and Tremont Waters for their contributions last night in what turned out to be a disappointing 99-94 loss to the Washington Wizards. Waters scored eight points in a mere seven minutes on 3-of-6 from the field. But it was Grant Williams that gave Boston some hope in the loss. We opened to a slow start and fell to the Wizards 99-94. Despite the loss the we did have a chance to win the game thanks in part to our rookie contributions. pic.twitter.com/MIysUhqZEV — Boston Celtics (@celtics) January 7, 2020 Grant logged 25 minutes in the contest, scoring nine points and taking down six boards, while adding one steal and one block. While the entire Celtics team shot a horrid 34.7% from the field and 21.6% on 3-pointers, GWill's only misses came at the free throw line. He was 3-of-3 from the field, 1-of-1 from beyond the arc, but only 2-of-5 on free throws. Waters was 50% from the field, hitting 3-of-6 shots. Grant and Tremont tied Daniel Theis fo...

Can we expect a future Tremont Waters-Tacko Fall Celtics tandem?

It is not out of line to start thinking of a Tremont Waters-Tacko Fall tandem operating on the Celtics second unit down the road. The duo is tearing up the G League with their synergistic play. Waters has proven himself at the G League level as a prolific scorer and facilitator, and even at 5'10", that should translate to the Big League. Tacko is an absolute double-double machine, and if he can continue to hone his skills, he has a place in the NBA. ICYMI: We moved to 11-6 on the season with a 115-91 win over the @CPSkyhawks at home today. Tremont Waters led the team with 28 points and also added 8 assists. @tackofall99 had his 6th double double of the season with a 21 point and 18 rebound performance. #CrustaceanNation pic.twitter.com/YkZGIHJkX4 — Maine Red Claws (@maineredclaws) December 30, 2019 For the Red Claws, Waters is averaging 20.6 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 7.5 APG and 2.3 SPG. Tremont Waters merits a standard NBA contract as soon as NOW

The word is out! Celtics rookie, Tremont Waters is no longer a secret playing for the G League Maine red Claws. Taken with the 51st pick in the second round of the 2019 NBA draft, Waters is drawing a lot of attention from rival General Managers. The 5'10" point guard is averaging 32.5 MPG, 20.2 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 7.5 APG and 2.3 SPG for the Red Claws. He was chosen G League Player of the Month for November, 2019. He is quick. He is clever. He can score in so many ways, and his passing skills are NBA-level right now. One last name that came up repeatedly talking to front office executives and scouts about the G-League Showcase: Tremont Waters. Water is on a Two-Way with Boston. "He's an NBA backup PG right now. I told our GM to trade for him, because he's better than what we have today." — Keith Smith (@KeithSmithNBA) December 23, 2019 Tremont is currently on a two-way contract for the Celtics, splitting time between the Maine Red Claws and the Celtics. Tremont Waters contributes big-time to Celtics 103-102 win over Kings

With Kemba Walker out of action with a neck strain, two-way player, Tremont Waters, came off the bench in Boston's 103-102 victory over the Kings and clearly demonstrated he belongs at the NBA level. Tremont logged 19 minutes and came away with seven points, two rebounds, three assists, one steal, two blocks and a team-high plus/minus of +20. No other Celtic was even close to that plus/minus score, with Semi Ojeleye coming in second with a +10. Waters was only 1-of-5 on 3-pointers but the one he made was from way down town. Time for Celtics to call up Tremont Waters from G- League

Fans can expect Kemba Walker to be out of the Celtics lineup for at least a few games after his collision with teammate, Semi Ojeleye. Walker is apparently suffering from concussion symptoms, and we await further updates. With both Kemba and Gordon missing time, Boston will sorely need to find more scoring and assists from their healthy crew. One solution is two-way player, Tremont Waters. He is a major reason the G League Celtics affiliate Red Claws have started the season undefeated at 5-0. He supplies both scoring (20.2 PPG in G League) and assists (7.8 APG). He can hit from anywhere on the court and is just plain crafty with the ball. How do Celtics fill the void created by Kemba Walker's injury?

Following Kemba Walkers head/neck injury last night in Boston's 96-92 loss to the Denver Nuggets, the Celtics will have to dig deep into their limited point guard lineup. Kemba supplies so much for Boston on both ends of the court, and his loss for at least several games is a test of team-resiliency. The Celtics really do have a shortage of pure point guards. Brad Stevens has used Brad Wanamaker in that role for the last two games, and that has worked fairly well. Most analysts don't regard Marcus Smart as a pure point guard, and I agree. Marcus is not a pure-anything. He calls himself a "stretch 6", and that works for me. All that aside, he is a very good facilitator that takes care of the ball, currently planted in the NBA's top ranking in assist-to-turnover ratio for players averaging more than 24 minutes/game. We can expect point guard, Tremont Waters, to be brought up from the G League Maine Red Claws. Waters is on a two-way contract, and the time is ri...

Guest article: Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters launch Maine Red Claws to a 4-0 start

Guest Article: Diandra Moorhead Sending the 7'5" rookie, Tacko Fall, to the G League has Boston Celtics fans eager for his Celtics return. He has signed a two-way contract with the Boston Celtics and the Maine Red Claws allowing him to spend up to 45 days with the Celtics. This means most of his days will be spent with the Red Claws preparing for his NBA games. The G League has provided Tacko with significant floor time as he is averaging 26 minutes per game. The center is averaging an impressive 16.0 points, 9.0 boards and 3.5 blocks on 77% shooting from the field. Fall produced back-to-back double-doubles in his first two G League games and matched that with a perfect shooting performance Sunday in a win over Raptors 905, hitting all nine of his field goal attempts. The real question fans are beginning to ask themselves are how well will this Green Giant match up against seasoned NBA players? . @tackofall99 was on point today #2WayPlayer 14 PTS | 7 REB | 3 BLK @UCF_...

Quick look at Tacko, Waters and Langford after two G League games

The Maine Red Claws have played two games thus far this season and stand at 2-0. Tacko Fall and Tremont Waters are both on two-way contracts and Romeo Langford is signed to a standard deal but is getting some experience and seasoning in the G League. Tremont Waters is off to a great start with the G League Maine Red Claws. Highlights: Tremont Waters has a great night in Maine https://t.co/6dJVsX7262 — Tom Lane (@CelticsSentinel) November 17, 2019 Waters is the star so far, averaging 22.5 PPG, 3.5 RPG and 5.0 APG, while hitting 44% of his field goals and 42% of his treys. This little guy has NBA skills. Tacko is doing just fine, averaging a double-double of 14.5 PPG and 12.0 RPG. And no surprise, he is blocking 4.5 shots per game. Particularly in the G League, this Green Giant seems unstoppable close to the hoop. Tacko Fall is averaging a double-double (14.5 PPG, 12.0 RPG) and the Maine Red Claws have won their first two games. Highlights: Tacko Fall gets the double-double in ...

Top Celtics performers in pre-season play - each category - youngsters only

The main purpose of exhibition games is to watch and evaluate the new arrivals - but mostly the young guys. Despite his advanced age (30), I will include Brad Wanamaker in this discussion. Here is my breakdown, by category, after four pre-season games for the Guys in Green. Points per game "The Sniper", Carsen Edwards takes this one. His 15.3 PPG comes in at number one. Tremont Waters gets the #2 spot with 12.0 points/game. This undersized duo got it done on the scoring end in pre-season. Size didn't matter in pre-season - and it may not in the upcoming regular season. Total field goals made Edwards takes this category also. He made a total of 22 field goals, and he is followed by Tremont Waters with 18 and Javonte Green with 16. Edwards is a volume scorer - make no mistake. And don't dismiss Waters as a versatile point guard that can stick on a full-time NBA roster. Field goal percentage Technically, Vincent Poirier (100%) and Rob Williams (83%) lead the pack, b...

Tremont Waters needs to be taken seriously as a solid NBA-level player

Lost in the euphoria surrounding the 30-point scoring explosion of Carsen Edwards in last night's 118-95 win over Cleveland was the play and production of fellow-rookie, Tremont Waters. Waters came away with a team-second-best 24 points (to Carsen's 30 points) on 10-of-16 from the field and 3-of-8 on 3-pointers. Tremont passed off for a team-high seven assists, plus adding two rebounds and two steals. Brad Stevens has stated that all of the newcomers on the Celtics team can play - and he means it. The only negative part of that is trying to figure out who sticks on the full-time roster and who doesn't. The Max Strus versus Javonte Green debate continues, and it may just come down to what special need has to be filled. But Waters cannot be ignored in the discussion about the final 15-man roster. Much like former-Celtic, Isaiah Thomas, Waters knows just how to use his lack of size to ignite his offense. He has NBA-level skills and a solid basketball IQ ( per MassLive...

Carsen Edwards with a 30-point shooting blitz in Celtics 118-95 win over Cavaliers

The Celtics picked the right guy at #33 overall in the 2019 NBA draft, and I picked the right one to write for @CelticsSentinel. Only two days ago, guest writer, Jim McIntyre made a potent argument that Carsen Edwards is the best shooter on the Celtics roster, and Carsen showed us that last night in Boston's take-out of Cleveland, 118-95. “I‘ve never see anything like that,” Brad Stevens says of Carsen Edwards hitting eight 3-pointers in just 5:06 of game action. — Boston Celtics (@celtics) October 16, 2019 Besides loving to watch @Cboogie_3 play, I have written that he scores in bunches. Hell, he poured in 24 points in a mere six minutes of the third quarter. He is quick and unpredictable, and as coach Brad Stevens indicated below, "His burst is different." Brad Stevens on Carsen Edwards: “When he came in for a workout, it was very clear he was a guy we wanted to draft. His burst is different.” — Boston Celtics (@celtics) October 15, 2019 We are looking at a scori...
