 If you think you have an interesting story - maybe you do, but a veteran cop has many, many more. I spent 20-plus years as a cop, retiring as Lieutenant, and this is one of the many incidents that my brain cannot dispose of. The father came to the police station, reporting he had found his son dead . He was clearly distraught but lucid. My partner and I went with the father to the young man's home and found him deceased on his bed. It was a clear suicide - but an unusual one. The son had put a rope noose around his neck and tied the other end to the headboard of the bed . And he apparently worked his body towards the foot of the bed - thereby tightening the noose - which led to his death. The young man's dad told us that his son owned a handgun and did a lot of target shooting. We found the gun which was an expensive, Colt .45 ACP target pistol.  The primary rule of survival is:   "Be aware of your surroundings" Okay. So what can kill you? The specific list is long, but the basic things that do people in include: 1.) Serious disease 2.) Traumatic injury 3.) Suicide 4.) Murder 5.) Terrible genetics I have survived several bouts with #1, serious illness - including dangerously-high blood pressure, prostate cancer and aortic stenosis . Any of the three maladies could have done me in had my doctor not detected the issues while they were still manageable.  The lessons are clear . I have almost-always been in good-to-excellent shape - and remain there at the age of 80-plus. It is always a good practice to go into surgery lean and muscular. The benefits of doing so far outweigh the work and mental discipline required. And another point. Avoiding the medical profession is not advisable for those seeking longevity. When Maine Weatherman, Tom Johnston , predicted a major storm to hit his home state on April 1 , 2017 , he had no idea how his life was about to fall apart on that day. Johnston was covering the annual Springfest at Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine . At the end of the day on April 1, he ended up at a home in Newry and allegedly raped a woman in that house - after which he left abruptly - and soon headed in a southerly direction towards Auburn, Maine. The alleged female victim reported the sexual assault , and was treated, at a hospital in Bridgeton, Maine on April 2, 2017 . Shortly thereafter, Johnston was reported missing . It turned out that he was allegedly identified by the victim as her attacker, making him the only suspect in the case . Approximately five days later, Tom Johnston's car was located in Auburn, Maine - and shortly thereafter, his body was found in a nearby wooded area.
