Top Celtics performers in pre-season play - each category - youngsters only

The main purpose of exhibition games is to watch and evaluate the new arrivals - but mostly the young guys. Despite his advanced age (30), I will include Brad Wanamaker in this discussion. Here is my breakdown, by category, after four pre-season games for the Guys in Green.

Points per game

"The Sniper", Carsen Edwards takes this one. His 15.3 PPG comes in at number one. Tremont Waters gets the #2 spot with 12.0 points/game. This undersized duo got it done on the scoring end in pre-season. Size didn't matter in pre-season - and it may not in the upcoming regular season.

Total field goals made

Edwards takes this category also. He made a total of 22 field goals, and he is followed by Tremont Waters with 18 and Javonte Green with 16. Edwards is a volume scorer - make no mistake. And don't dismiss Waters as a versatile point guard that can stick on a full-time NBA roster.

Field goal percentage

Technically, Vincent Poirier (100%) and Rob Williams (83%) lead the pack, but five made shots from Rob and only three by Vincent is too-poor a sample. So the team-high in FG% goes to Javonte Green with 80% field goal accuracy.

Three-point percentage

Gunslinger "Kit Carsen" came in number one on 3-point percentage with 45%. He is followed by Grant Williams and Max Strus, each at 42%. I will be eyeing Carsen's early performances in my potential Fantasy Basketball free-agent pick-ups. It comes down to minutes-played in Fantasy, and I Carsen sees enough time, he could be a pick-up

Free throw percentage

Brad Wanamaker hit 93% of his free throw attempts, coming in at number one. Both Edwards and Grant came in at 75%. Wanamaker has a standard contract this season, but nothing guarantees he will stick. But his 9.3 PPG, 3.0 RPG, 3.7 APG and 1.0 SPG in pre-season makes a good case for retaining him.

Rebounds

Javonte Green gets the nod here, averaging 4.0 RPG. Grant Williams came in a close second at 3.8 rebounds/game.

Assists

No surprises here. Waters comes in at #1 with 4.0 APG, followed by Brad Wanamaker with 3.7.

Steals

Tremont Waters picked up the most thefts per game at 1.5 SPG. Wanamaker came in second with 1.0 steals per game.

Fouls

The adage that inexperience leads to fouls on the hardwood applies here. Carsen and G-Will averaged 3.0 fouls per game, followed by Brad (2.3), Tacko (1.8), Rob (1.5), Max (1.5) and Vincent (1.5). Young guys don't get the calls on offense - and get little respect on defense.

Final analysis

There is no doubt that Carsen Edwards was the star of the show in exhibition play. He may have a good shot at significant minutes on the second unit right off the bat. Many still disbelieve in the potential of Waters becoming a legitimate NBA player. Not me. He is too skilled to be ignored. Look for Danny Ainge to make a few moves in the next several days as the regular season approaches.
