The fiddleheads and orpine are out on the banks of the trout stream bordering my property in Northern New Hampshire. I will have to wait a bit for the wild blueberries, blackberries, high bush cranberries, wild lettuce and the various edible mushrooms . Fiddleheads I have always had an interest in wild foods, but lately I have tried to learn more about them. It is not about the fact that they are free, since locating and foraging for them can take time and effort. But their nutritional value makes it all worthwhile. Orpine That wild blueberry that you pick has "learned" to survive on its own against insects, disease and fungus. Particularly i n its blue-colored skin there are organic chemicals, including polyphenols, that produce that color - protect the berry - and possibly protect the person that consumes it from disease.
