Prelude: Why I love Marcus Smart and the Boston Celtics

This is the short version - because my family is absolutely tired. I promise the full version tomorrow morning, but there is still much more to the story. If you have watched the Boston or New Hampshire news, you have seen what started as my very simple plea for a single card to be sent to a grieving 7-year-old. It has truly gone viral. Channel 7, WMUR, Fox News and possibly channel 4 covered it. I put out a simple request to the Celtics Carson Edwards for one card to be sent to my great grandson, Carson Thomas Lane. His mom, my grand daughter, died one week ago from Cystic Fibrosis. The flood of gifts and well-wishes went into the thousands from all over the planet. Marcus Smart was the first to respond - no surprise there - love the man - as my readers know. Isaiah Thomas had already stepped up a while back, and rookie Carsen Edwards followed suit. The tears from my daughter, Lisa, and my great grandson, Carson, are all too real. So is the whole story. Watch for it tomorrow. 💔 7-y...

The Maine Red Claws opened their season with a 148-125 romp over the Delaware Blue Coats. Two-way player Tremont Waters had a team-high 28 points, in addition to four rebounds and three assists. Waters shot 9-of-11 from the field and 7-of-11 from 3-point-land. Gordon Hayward explodes for 39 points in Celtics 119-113 win over Cleveland

Gordon Hayward really doesn't want to talk about his 2017 ankle injury any more - he just wants to play. And he certainly did last night when the Celtics took down the Cavaliers, 119-113. He racked up a team-high 39 points while hitting ALL 16 of his 2-point attempts. Oh, and he added seven rebounds and eight assists (per NBA's Steve Herrick): Cavaliers forward Larry Nance Jr. had a simple assessment of the performance. ''He (Hayward) didn't miss,'' Nance said. ''He's crafty. He plays the game at a very cerebral level.'' "Crafty", indeed! I have written this frequently about the versatile Hayward. He is as clever a player as we see on the hardwood. Much like Paul Pierce , he works the ball on offense, always looking for the right play, whether it be a drive, jumper or pass. "Cerebral" defines his play. Here's the entire list of NBA players who have made at least 15 2-pointers in a game without a miss: ∙ Wil...

Enes Kanter takes a hit at Kyrie Irving and jokes with Kemba Walker

I knew I was going to love this guy. Enes Kanter may not be great at defense or hitting treys, but he is a lot of fun. On wearing #11 for Boston, he mimicked Kyrie Irving perfectly by responding, "I wanna be the reason no one else will (be wearing #11). I had to say it!" “I wanna be the reason no one else will.” Enes Kanter used Kyrie’s exact line on why he chose to wear No. 11 in Boston 😂 (via @NBCSCeltics ) pic.twitter.com/KZDkrneU1R — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) July 17, 2019 Kanter also switched over to his reporter-persona and asked Kemba Walker, "How much you gonna pass me the ball?" Walker gave it some quick thought and came back with "zero". Enes Kanter hops into the media scrum with a super important question pic.twitter.com/sNMgTXHaJX — John Karalis 🇬🇷 (@RedsArmy_John) July 17, 2019 Both Walker and Kanter were relaxed at the gathering today, and that bodes well for the season ahead. Good to see some humor back. Follow Tom at ...

Future Celtics star, Jayson Tatum, dominates in Rising Stars Challenge

The Lakers Kyle Kuzma came away with the MVP award, as Team USA defeated Team World in the Rising Stars Challenge - but Jayson Tatum absolutely dominated - scoring 30 points, hauling down nine rebounds and handing off for three assists. The final score was 161-144 in favor of Jayson's Team USA, and the score clearly indicates that defense was not a major priority in the game. Tatum was clearly having fun out there. He has become a solid rebounder at the small forward position, and his drives to the hoop are stronger and more successful. He will be a true star in this League shortly. . @jaytatum0 tells me the highligh...
