Chris Paul to Boston ?: "Lob City" redux

Yes, I know the odds of The Suns' Chris Paul ending up with the Boston Celtics after possibly being waived by Phoenix are quite slim, but I honestly think that offering CP3 a second shot as the initiator of Lob City - and possibly his first Championship. Picture it. That would mean putting Chris back with Blake Griffin - and r eplacing the Dunk Machine, Deandre Jordan, with Rob Williams . Blake and Chris are not the same players fans watched with the Clippers, but both can still operate at a fairly-high level in somewhat-restricted minutes. CP3’s market, at least for a short-money deal, will be strong. Memphis, which should be aggressive. Both LA teams. Boston, which could be on the hunt for more playmaking. Miami, even. Lot of possibilities. — Chris Mannix (@SIChrisMannix) June 7, 2023 Let me continue. Two of the several issues that cost the Celtics from competing in the Finals this past season careless passes and turnovers . Chris Paul averaged 7.9 assists per game this past...

One of Blake Griffin's wishes did not come true in Boston

No, we are not talking about Blake Griffin not winning a Title with the Boston Celtics. Here is his wish list, from November of last year: “I think that’s just part of understanding who you are and where you are in your career,” Griffin said. “I think there’s an opportunity here and the biggest thing for me is playing meaningful basketball, playing basketball in the playoffs and also being part of a good group. I think this place checks that list.” Blake only got on the floor in 41 games this past season and averaged 13.9 minutes per game. That may have fulfilled his desire to "play meaningful basketball". And he certainly was part of a "good group" .  However, he only participated in one of Boston's 20 playoff contests - playing a mere 5.9 minutes and going scoreless. Saying he "played basketball in the playoffs" would be a stretch . Fun fact: Blake Griffin took the biggest pay cut in NBA history, making $32M in 2021-2022, to the $2M veteran’...

Blake Griffin as playoff secret weapon? Could happen.

Blake Griffin isn't ready for the rocking chair - not yet, anyway. He had solid stats (8/5/1/1/1) in Boston's win over the Hawks last night in 15 minutes of action . His potential post-season role is still a mystery, but it appears he could be a secret waepon for Joe Mazzulla . I persist in posting per-36-minutes stats , despite some flak for doing to, because it can reveal a player's present ceiling - given ample floor time. Here they are for Blake: 11.4 points - 8.6 rebounds - 3.4 assists - 0.9 steals - .495 FG - .365 3s His role and floor time in the post-season will depend on the health of Rob Williams and Al Horford , but even with both centers at full health, fans may see more of Griffin when the playoffs are underway. So, the rocking chair can go back in the basement for now. The 6-time All-Star will turn 34 in a few days , and he has been a perfect role player for the Celtics. That role may be about to expand.

Blake Griffin exemplifies what is needed to fill 15th roster spot

Despite the 131-125 loss to the Bucks last night in overtime, there were plenty of heroes among the Celtics "subs" that fought the surging-and-healthy Milwaukee Bucks, and Blake Griffin was one of them. Brad Stevens didn't pick up the 6-time All-Star, expecting his career line of 20/8/4.   Griffin was picked up for his remaining skills - his ability to accept a limited role - but most of all, his desire to be in Boston . His production versus Milwaukee (15 points, 6 boards, 6 assists, one steal, one block) shows that he still has enough in the tank to play a significant role in the post-season. With respect to that open roster spot , filling it with (as Stevens stated) someone "really excited to be here" is the key. That sounds like Blake Griffin. After a long and star-filled career, the 6'9" C/F remains without a Title.   If the buyout market presents a guy that has starred in the NBA - is a veteran of the playoff wars - wants a Championshi...

Thoughts from the Celtics Knight

Trade deadline today, will we see any minor moves by the Celtics?! A wing and a big?! Or are we waiting for the buyout market?!  It's been busy already with the Jazz, Fakers, and T-wolves three team deal. Kyrie heading to Dallas and KD heading to Phoenix. Unfortunately I think the Fakers make out in their deal. The Mavs and Suns on paper make out. Although the Nets have accumulated a group of guys who have various skill sets.  Huge huge huge shout-out to Blake Griffin for always being ready to do what's needed. The C's had come out flat last night and after a few threes from Blake that energy shifted. You have to love a guy like Blake, who once was a star but now is your utility guy and is always willing step up. His defense on Embid was solid, his rebounding was sound, and let's face it he was an assassin from deep. Love guys like this!  DWhite has proven to be an invaluable piece to this Celtics team. He's a solid point guard when needed, he can shoot the three,...

Celtics show "quality depth" in 117-108 victory over Pistons

The Boston Celtics are not simply a deep team, they exhibited "quality" depth off the bench in last night's 117-108 win over Detroit .   Let's start with Grant Williams, usually a pine guy for Boston. He started the game at the forward spot with Jaylen Brown sitting this one out - logged 45 minutes - racked up 19 points on 58% from the field and 50% on treys - grabbed 10 boards - and passed off for four assists with only one turnover.  Blake Griffin , normally another Pine Presence, started in place of Al Horford and supplied seven points ands six rebounds. Noah Vonleh showed what he does best - rebounding and defending. He supplied only two points, but brought down seven rebounds and added two assists.  Payton Pritchard got into the action once again, logging 15 minutes with a line of 5P/2R/2A but managed to come away with a team-high plus/minus of +16 . With Al Horford, Jaylen Brown and Malcolm Brogdon sitting this one out - and Rob Williams on target to re...

Boston won't become "Lob City", but welcome addition of Blake Griffin

Beyond his age (33) and injury history, Blake Griffin can contribute right away with the Celtics. Fans won't see the same player from the Clippers Lob City days, but at 6'9" and 250 lbs., he can still catch-and-jam - while also grabbing his share of rebounds. Blake's per-36-minutes stats from last season with Brooklyn might surprise a few readers: 13.5 points - 8.6 rebounds - 3.9 assists No, Griffin won't be on the floor for 36 minutes per game, but he will put up decent numbers when he is out there. And when Rob Williams returns to action , we may see both on the court together - at least on occasion - showing us the Boston version of "Lob City" - at least for brief stints.

Blake Griffin agrees to buyout - could fill a Bill Walton-like role with Celtics

With Detroit's Blake Griffin reportedly agreeing to a buyout today, he just might fit into Danny Ainge's plans. Yes, I know what you are thinking- Blake's injury history is just too lengthy to seriously consider him in Boston. Well, so was Bill Walton's long line of injuries , but he was a major factor in the Celtics winning the 1986 Championship. Six-time All-Star forward Blake Griffin has agreed to a contract buyout with the Detroit Pistons and will become an unrestricted free agent, sources tell ESPN. — Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) March 5, 2021  Ainge was on that team, and that may just spur him on to try to get the 6'9" wing on board. Griffin is a 6-time All-Star and certainly has that "shooting with size" the Celtics are seeking. Granted, he is only shooting 36% from the field this season, while averaging 12.3 PPG, 5.2 RPG and 3.9 APG, but Ainge could take a shot at a deja vu from the 80's, hoping that like Walton, Blake could fill a need ...

Blake Griffin on why post-game interviews are stupid

I owe this one to Barstool Sports . I love their content versatility, and this is one of many. Their piece on the stupidity of post-game interviews is funny and right-on. I will explain. Jimmy is put to the postgame interview test by @blakegriffin23 . More with @blakegriffin23 on #FallonTonight ! pic.twitter.com/cFyZaWSZqb — Fallon Tonight (@FallonTonight) July 18, 2019 Blake Griffin is a personality with a Capital "P". Interviewing an athlete that has just worked out for two hours is a lost cause. Blake is right. It is stupid. So much of the blood nourishing the brain needs to go to the muscles being worked during exercise, and athletes (or Personal Training clients in my case), get stupid. My clients need close attention after the first-half of the session is over. They forget my name after working with me for decades. They butcher the exercise. My clients tell me they stay with me so the workouts become mindless - and do they ever. I joke with them all the time. ...
