Anyone remember Vinnie Johnson, aka "The Microwave". Former Celtics head honcho Danny Ainge dubbed him with the moniker because Vinnie would heat up fast when coming off the bench for the Detroit Pistons in the late 80s.
Johnson averges 24.7 minutes per game for his career, and the 6'2" combo guard was primarily a scorer and often gave the opposition, including Boston, fits. Well, the Boston Celtics currently have their own version of "The Microwave" in 6'3" guard, Anfernee Simons.
Simons is averaging 24.2 PPG off the bench for Boston, and he is hitting 44% from the field and 41% on the long ball. Like Vinnie, he is primarily a scorer - and can be a deadly one. In Jayson Tatum's absence, he has he has excelled in his offensive role.
From his arrival in Boston, Anfernee has been the subject of trade talks, He will earn roughly $27.7 million this season on an expiring contract. But the trade deadline is approaching, and Brad Stevens is still trying to lower the salary load of his overachieving squad. Simons has shown enough to possibly remain in Boston where his bench scoring could be critical in this season's playoffs.
