Founding Fathers... Episode 1
The Celtics have been in the forefront of social justice and of course winning. Red Auerbach was the leader of all of that. A man who was unafraid of what anyone would say. Bob Cousy was ahead of his time the way that man could handle the rock and distribute it! He was a magician on the floor! I personally remember meeting Couz as a young man. He was doing a game at the old Springfield Civic Center. Amazing that despite all the undertones of racism in Boston, the Celtics were the first team to draft a black player in Chuck Cooper. Something to be said for Cooper and Cousy who built a friendship despite looking different. As it should be!
When the Celtics drafted Bill Russell everything in the course of NBA history was set afire. Red knew he could be the most dominant player on defense, I mean let's be real on both ends of thr floor. Pairing Russell and Cousy was one of the most genius sports moves of all time. In the 1957 Finals we see the coming out party of both Bill Russell and Tommy Heinsohn. Both guys were rookies and yet led the Celtics in game seven of the Finals! The first title of many for our beloved Boston Celtics!
Cousy, Ramsey, Sam Jones, KC Jones, Satch Sanders, Sharman, Heinsohn, Russell, I mean we are talking about Basketball royalty. The Celtics have always been about team, not individuals and these guys showed that. Red taught them to play TEAM basketball. It's sad that there was a day where the Celtics players could not eat in certain restaurants given the color of their skin. As we witness in 61 down in Kentucky. That to me just doesn't make any sense. Especially for me basketball brings us together no matter what the color of our skin is.
No Final Victories... Episode 2
Bill Russell not only was a great basketball player, but a man who fought for what's right. He was willing to fight for social equality no matter the color of your skin. The Celtics were the first team to ever start an all black starting five. A historic moment in the history of all sports nevermind the NBA. Bill Russell the man went thru some awful things in Boston. Things that no man or family should endure.
During this time Red made the decision to change the road uniforms to Celtics instead of Boston. Given the fact the players played for the Celtics and each other not the city of Boston given their issues with race. The Celtics have and will always be about team, playing for each other. Playing for the Celtics! No other team has that call to each other. It's crazy to me seeing fans smoking cigarettes in the stands!
Game 7 seven vs the Sixers, Russell with a turnover. Asks his teammates to pick him up... Havlicek Stole the Ball! One of the greatest calls of all time by the late great Johnny Most! One of the most incredible sports calls in the history of American sports. There's something to being a Celtic that is unlike anything else in sports. These Celtics won 8 titles in a row and 9 of 10! This will never be touched ever again!
After Red wins his final game as a coach, Bill Russell becomes the first black coach in the NBA. Not only is he coach of the Celtics but he's also still a player. It's great getting to see all the kids of the past Celtics players in these episodes. It's so sad that during this Celtics reign of dominance that they saw the loss of JFK and Martin Luther King Jr. It's a testimonial to the strength of this group playing despite the assassination of Dr King. These gentleman went through quite a lot and yet found a way to come together and win.
1969... The "old Celtics" as a four seed beat the Sixers and Knicks and now take on the Lakers. Here we are in game seven and the Celtics find out what the Lakers have planned after winning this game. Cs take this to the locker room and use it as fuel. Sam Jones takes it to Bill and Bill says it won't happen! What a shot by Don Nelson! He said it was the luckiest shot he ever made. Securing the Celtics eleventh championship! You can really feel Jerry Wests pain as he talks in this documentary. The emotion from Bill Russell post game made me break down. 11 titles in 13 years! Russell's last game was him going out a champion.
All Swept Up... Episode 3
JB says It's an Honor to be a Celtic! Its an honor getting to see you in Green and White JB! According to Satch Sanders Red was a bit cheap with certain players. Something I never knew. We get to see the transition from Russ as Coach to Tommy. We get the elder statesmen in Hondo, with guys like JoJo White and Dave Cowens being drafted. Dave Cowens was one of the toughest and most talented bigs the Cs ever had. JoJo White was silky smooth out on the floor. Fun fact is Dave and Jojo were roommates on the road.
1974 we see the Celtics get revenge on the Knicks for the previous year. The Celtics ended up facing the Bucks and Kareem in the Finals. Dave Cowens accepted the challenge of guarding Kareem and leading the charge to Banner number 12. How about that play by Dave Cowens guarding Oscar Robertson and diving on the floor! That's one of the most memorable plays of all time. When you look up Dave Cowens that play epitomizes who he is! How about those Celtics going on the road in game seven and winning it all! Amazing things about Dave Cowens after the win sleeping on a bench in Boston. Not to mention driving a cab for quite a time!
A very racially charged time in Boston during this time in Celtics basketball. I just can't wrap my head around how much hatred was not only in Boston but all around the country. We get some insight about how JT feels about being in Boston. He talks about how his first child was born here, he got his first car here yet he didn't feel a part of everything until his third or fourth year. Enter the 1976 NBA finals vs the Phoenix Suns. I see why Pat Riley hated the Celtics he played for the Suns that year?! I can't stand Pat the Rat! Can we talk about that triple overtime game! One of the most incredible NBA finals games of all time! JoJo White played 60 out of 63 minutes in that game. Cs go into Phoenix and win Banner 13!
Unfortunately the Celtics traded Paul Silas over money. In retrospect Paul wished he never left Boston. During this time Dave Cowens left the Celtics for a while. Come those later years in the seventies the Celtics hit some pretty low points as an organization. In 78 we see Hondo play his last game as a Celtic. Mind blowing to me guys would speak after their last games to the crowd. We also see JoJo White get traded and that's crazy especially given how great he was. I didn't know Red was up for sale, and was willing to consider going to the Knicks. Thank goodness that never happened!
Draft Day in 1978, Larry Joe Bird is drafted by our beloved Boston Celtics. Larry Bird is my absolute favorite Celtic of all time. To me he's a top five player of all time! What that man could do on a basketball court was second to none! Seeing him take that Indiana State team to the college final is incredible. None of his teammates even sniffed the NBA.
Great Hope Period... Episode 4
During this time in the NBA it was becoming a league that could have folded. In that first practice Cedric Maxwell realized that Bird could play! Larry Bird was an incredibly complete player. He could shoot, rebound, and pass like no one since Bob Cousy. Larry elevated his teammates in way that no one else could. Larry and Magic both measured themselves against each other. It all started on that fateful night in the NCAA championship. Those two men saved the NBA and we all owe them a lot.
Red turns what could have been Joe Barry Carroll into Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. Red Auerbach was a mastermind playing chess while other NBA owners were playing checkers. Putting the Chief, Kevin and Larry together would cause problems for the entire NBA. I truly believe they were the Best Big Three of all time! At that time the Celtics practiced at Hellenic College! A Greek Orthodox school with one gym. This 1981 team was stacked! Bill Fitch was in the service and took those principles into coaching. During this season Dave Cowens retired.
1981 Eastern Coference Finals, Cs trail three to one. A year after knocking the Cs out of the playoffs. The Sixer and Celtic rivalry is one of the greatest of all time. At this time coming back from this series lead was very very rare. Cs win a nail biter in game five to push it to Philly. A place where they haven't won in years! Not to mention being down by ten in the third. In this game Max gets pushed into the stands and eventually starts fighting with the fans. That was the moment where the series shifted. Cs with the Dub and are on to game seven. In game seven we see a blood bath, both teams are giving everything they had. All tied up and Larry nails the shot off the glass Celtics lead! Celtics do the impossible and come back to win the series 4-3. Absolutely incredible!
1981 the Celtics bring home Banner 14 when they beat the Houston Rockets. In pretty dominant fashion they showed why we are the greatest franchise of all time. Larry Bird with the quote of the year. "Moses Does Eat S@#$". I didn't know the Celtics had a theme song that year?! No More Games! This Celtics City series is reminding me of things I forgot. Plus I'm learning new things as well. In trying to repeat in 1982 Tiny Archibalds injury eventually costs the Celtics the series. We hear the infamous chant of Beat LA, as the Sixers win the series. In 1983 we get the infamous tackle by Danny Ainge where he's bit by Tree Rollins. Losing to the Bucks in the playoffs was the last nail in the coffin for Coach Bill Fitch.
F... the Celtics... Episode 5
Opening number to this episode is seeing KC Jones sing and officially become the newest Celtics coach. We also welcome Dennis Johnson to the team. The 1984 Celtics were one of the best teams of all time. We finally see Bird and Magic go head to head for the ultimate prize. Lakers take game one and the Celtics looked to be in trouble. Cs down by two in game two. Gerald Henderson with the huge steal! How about having Tommy on the call, music to my ears. Cs win game two in overtime! Gerald Henderson with the biggest steal in Celtics history. Game three and the Celtics get pantsed. Larry calls out his team as a bunch of sissies. Game four we see Kevin McHale knock Kurt Rambis on his bleep! KC told the team no more layups! Kevin made sure it was taken to heart. At this moment the Celtics have gotten in the Lakers heads. Max gives Worthy the choke sign while at the line. ML with the steal to cap it off!
Game 5 of the Finals in Boston was one of the hottest days of the year. Larry Bird flourished in the hot box that was the Garden. Cs with a huge eighteen point win, and head to LA for a chance at winning Banner 15. In Game 6 the Lakers bounce back to tie the series 3-3. It all comes down to this, game seven in Boston Garden. Game seven was a masterclass by the Boston Celtics. Cs beat the Lakers as the Beat LA chant rings through the Garden! Larry dedicates this win to Terre Haute Indiana. This may have been the best Finals series of all time. It opened the door for Michael Jordan and the Dream Team to take the NBA to levels out of this world. Thank you Larry and Magic for everything you gave basketball.
In a sunrise move Gerald Henderson was dealt to the Sonics. According to Danny Ainge KC was instrumental in this trade. Ultimately KC wanted to have Danny Ainge in the starting line up. During this season we see the huge fight between Larry and Dr J. In that same season we see Kevin McHale put up 56 points. Larry in the next game goes out there and puts up sixty. Bird was so incredible that night even the Hawks players were rooting for him. Larry Bird was on another level in that entire season. Unfortunately for the Celtics they lost to the Lakers in the Finals. This is despite the Celtics winning game one by 34. Absolutely brutal not being able to go back to back. Larry Bird was clearly playing with an injury.
Celtics have traded Cedric Maxwell to the Clippers for Luke Walton. Bill Walton has brought a whole new enthusiasm to this Celtics team. What an incredible character Bill Walton was. That 1986 Celtics team was one of the best of all time! Top five all time NBA team ever! While the Celtics were waiting to see the Lakers in the Finals, it was the Rockets who were there. During game five we get the infamous Sampson melee. Game Six in the Garden as Banner 16 is close. Bird with his corner three that we all have practiced over and over again in our driveways. One of the prettiets shots I've ever seen in my life. In the draft the Celtics have taken Len Bias... The ultimate what if in all of sports. This kid had the ability to be like Michael Jordan, but he died on draft night after using cocaine.
Untenable Toll... Episode 6
Bias considers himself to be blessed by being drafted by the Celtics. Bird was huge on the Celtics getting Bias. Red had once again found a way at a generational talent. Red said he was a Celtic type kid, and man what he could have been. I always envisioned him coming into Boston and becoming the next great Celtic. To me he would have been able to bring several titles to the Garden rafters. Red himself has said if he were to start a franchise he wouldn't know who to choose. Would it be Larry or Bill... During the Celtics run at back to back titles injuries derailed them yet again. Talk about some awful luck, Len Bias dies and injuries cost the Celtics in the long run.
We can't help but forget the 1987 playoffs. Where we get Larry Birds incredible steal to DJ who scores the game winner. Larry as part of the Celtics City series basically said the Pistons were not a complete team. The Pistons were out to maim you. He said that was unfortunate when you are trying to make a living. In that playoff series we see Robert Parish knock Laimbeer on his rump. Good for the Chief! Those Pistons were a bunch of dirty players. Not to say they weren't talented but they played a dirt bag kind of game. Cs would win this series in seven games. This would be the last time the Celtics would reach the Finals with the Big Three.
1988 Conference Finals is the beginning of the end for the Celtics.Following that season KC Jones retires and Larry has surgery and loses the entire year. Injuries to Larry, Kevin, and Bill really took a toll on them. Not only physically but mentally. Red was willing to say goodbye to the Celtics if they traded Kevin. What's crazy is the story that Danny Ainge tells where both Bird and McHale could have brought in a haul for both. In 89 Ainge gets traded to the Sacramento Kings. Danny Ainge was one of my favorite all time Celtics players. Reggie Lewis has entered the chat as the next great Celtic. He was the first Celtics jersey I ever bought. Reggie was going to be that next guy. Imagine if we had Bias and Lewis together?! My goodness we could have dominated the league.
In 1991 playoffs Larry Bird gave us an incredibly powerful performance vs the Pacers. Bird gets hurt as his face smashes into the Garden floor. Yet the man returned to the game. In that game he gave us one last incredible playoff performance. A testament to the greatness of Larry Joe Bird. 1992 Larry Bird retires, one of the saddest moments in my sports life. That 1993 retirement event for Bird was second to none! The man deserved that and more.
Not again... Episode 7
We open today's episode with Dee Brown and Jaylen Browns dunk contest highlights! Dee's Reeboks Pump It Up! I had the originals and even the remakes now. Enter Reggie Lewis! I bought his jersey with my own money and still have it today. Tommy Heinsohn names Dee Brown, Reggie Lewis and Brian Shaw the zip Boyz! Does anyone remember Reggie blocking Michael Jordan multiple times in one game. I do! Dee Brown was a guy I loved to watch as well. Plus later on in life he became Coach of the Springfield minor league team. I truly felt the future of the Celtics was bright with Reggie and Dee at the helm.
We get to see XMan! I had a pair of his shoes too! Those early 90s teams could have been something special. With Reggie at the helm the future was bright. When I say this I mean it I LOVED REGGIE LEWIS! 93 playoffs and Reggie collapses vs the Hornets. Leaves the game and ends up in the hospital. Reggie ends up missing the rest of the playoffs. Alonzo Mourning kills the Celtics with a buzzer beater. Reggie ends up hearing he has a heart problem. A life threatening heart condition. Unfortunately for Reggie he went to Brandeis and was shooting around. Where he collapsed and died. I was in Disney world that summer wearing his jersey when he died and I cried so much. I'm crying now as I'm watching this episode. Absolutely heart breaking then and now. Just IMAGINE Reggie and Len and the rings they would have won...
Reggies number thirty five sits in the rafters where it truly belongs. Kevin McHale retires in 93 following that loss to the Hornets. Robert Parish leaves in 94 and ends up in Charlotte before winning a ring with the Bulls. I loved those guys so much! I was lucky enough to meet the Chief and have a card signed by him. I saw Larry and Kevin both inducted into the Hall of Fame. I even shook Larry Birds hand at Magic Johnsons Hall of Fame Induction. In 95 we say goodbye to the Boston Garden. I was lucky enough to go on a tour of the old Garden and both me and my father stepped on the part of the floor where Larry hit that corner three vs the Rockets. We weren't supposed to but we did anyway! What were they gonna do throw us out?!
Enter the Fleet Center years where there wasn't much winning. ML Carr gets named as GM and Bill Russell prepares him for life in charge of the Celtics. ML fires our coach and takes over himself. Unfortunately for ML he could never quite get a grasp as coach. We welcome Antoine Walker into Boston. He was one of my favorite players of all time especially when he did the wiggle. Enter the 97 season where we really suck and get a lot of ping pong balls leading into the draft. Who was in that draft you ask... Tim Duncan! Did we end up with Tim Duncan, no we freaking didn't and I bet the league rigged it that way.
Celtics hire Rick Pitino who I thought had high upside. Unfortunately that ends up not being the case. Cs gave the man way too much control. Which eventually destroyed the team. Poor ML at the lottery and we end up with picks 3 and 6. I blame the NBA for that. Cs draft Chanucey Billups and Ron Mercer that year. What's crazy is opening night in 97 they Beat the Bulls! A game where Tommy Heinson said the words bull s%$# on air it was epic! That was the highlight of Rick Pitinos career in Boston. Beating the World Champion Bulls. What a disaster...
Dee Brown gets traded to the Toronto Raptors, Chauncey Billups as well. Only piece of value that came back in that trade we Kenny Anderson. Dee expected to be a Celtic for life. Billups ends up being a Hall of Famer and wins a title with the Pistons. Pitino really muffed that one up. 98 draft and we luck into drafting the TRUTH Paul Pierce! Pairing the Truth and Toine were some fun years for me as a fan. I was actually there with my father for the game where he scored his twenty thousandth point. A memory etched in my brain and heart.
1999 we see Bill Russell come back to Boston and get the honor he is due. That man went thru so much crap. We were blessed to have him. The highlight of Vince Carter hitting that game winning shot was the end of the Pitino Era. I was there and remember that press conference with Pitino. That shot by Vince Carter silenced the Garden crowd. I've never heard the place so silent in my life. Kudos to Toine to allow Paul Pierce to be the leader of those teams. During that season Paul Pierce gets stabbed eleven times... what in the actual hell. First Len, then Reggie are we gonna lose Paul too???
Ubuntu... Episode 8
Paul Pierce says he's lucky to be alive. The knife wound just misses his heart... if not we would have lost another star. Pitino offers to trade Pierce if he wants. Paul said no, now that's something that would have set the franchise back even more. Cs get waxed in Miami and Pitino quits thru fax. OK Rick, way to man up and run away in the middle of the night. Jim OBrien takes over for the Celtics. Signature Pierce moment drops 40 points on the Lakers and Shaq labels him the mother fn Truth!
2001 rekindled the Celtics magic. In 02 they came back from the largest deficit in the history of the NBA. Beating the Nets in that Eastern Coference Finals. I remember watching that game. Absolutely incredible! That team gave us hope that maybe the Celtics were back. Championships were on our mind as Celtics fans. Wyc and Pags buy the team and reinstall Red as president. Cs then tab Danny Ainge as head of basketball operations. Que Danny trading Antoine Walker away. Despite saying he wouldn't, and Toine called him a snake. Danny's response in this episode is I don't care. Gotta love it!
OBrien resigns and Doc Rivers is hired. Despite Doc being told not to go to Boston he comes anyways. I forgot Doc and the Truth had some issues early on. You have to appreciate seeing Paul Pierce getting the first ever Red Auerbach award. 2006 Red Auerbach passes away. An absolute legend with the Boston Celtics. Without him there is no Celtic Pride. Cs hit rock bottom again after Reds passing. Losing a historic amount of games in a row. What an absolutely awful season. Yet again another shot at getting a top draft pick. The draft that had Kevin Durant in it. Yet we end up with pick number five. So we missed out on Tim Duncan and Kevin Durant. Are you freaking kidding me...
Enter Danny trading for Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett. I always loved and wanted both of them as Celtics. Originally KG told the Celtics no despite having a trade agreed upon. Cs end up trading for Ray Allen first, and that shifted KG wanting to come to Boston. Now that summer was the most excited I've ever been about a Celtics team. The New Big Three is absolutely loaded! Paul, Ray and Kevin. Doc in his infinite wisdom finds Ubuntu. This is the call to greatness for this team.
That team was one of the best I've ever seen. Kevin Garnett changed the Celtics franchise in a way that can't be quantified. I absolutely love Kevin Garnett and still have the jersey I bought when we traded for him. What a player! I wish he was with us longer! This Celtics iteration had players who were like those of the past. The relationship that KG and Bill Russell built was beautiful. Talk about two of the greatest bigs of all time. Imagine having Bill Russell tell you he's proud of you... well he told KG that.
In those playoffs the Celtics faced a tough road. Those Pistons took em to seven and I was at game five. In that next series we get Leflop and the Cavs. Pierce put on a show and gave it everything he had out there. I've never seen Paul Pierce look and play like that. That was his greatest performance as a Celtic. Celtics now face an old foe in the Detroit Pistons. Cs put the Pistons away in six games. Enter the hated Lakers yet again. In that series the Celtics had another incredible comeback to win that game on the road in LA. Why is Bill Plache in this series? Just shut up bro. We all know who Donnie Wahlberg is and we love him! Hangin Tough!
Paul Pierce gets injured in game one of the Finals. Taken off in a wheelchair... Here comes Paul Pierce! Coming back into the game! Very Larry Bird like... and just like Larry Paul puts on a show for the ages yet again! The TRUTH BABY! Cs take the first two in Boston and lose game three. Enter game four where the Celtics trail by twenty four. Cs never stopped believing and made a comeback for the ages. Paul says let me guard Kobe in that second half. Cs grab their first lead of the game with under four minutes to go. It's three to one Boston! Cs lose game 5. Let's fly back to Boston to close it out. Close it out we did! We whooped that a@# for Banner 17! Back to where we belong! NBA Champions! Doc gets the Gatorade bath! ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!!!
That group should have won multiple titles. Unfortunately injuries took that away from us yet again. Now we enter the final chapter of this Celtics City.
We're the Celtics... Episode 9
09 KG gets hurt, and we go out vs the Magic in the playoffs. We would have won that year vs the Lakers yet again. 2010 is a team that should have won but the refs in game 7 vs the Lakers screwed us. An absolute travesty. Cs beat the Cavs that season and that's when Leflop left to the Heat. Cs exact revenge vs Orlando and beat em in the Eastern Coference Finals. We had game seven and the refs took it away. Unfortunately in game 6 Perk was severely injured. Yet another injury that cost the Cs a title. KG says it was like a mind f@#$, losing that series.
Kendrick Perkins gets traded to the Thunder. A trade that changed the dynamic of the team. A move and a time where things changed. During this season we see Ray and Rondo at odds. Cs with an early playoff exit which made me sick. Following season we get to the conference finals and lose again. Que Ray Allen leaving in free agency to the Miami Heat. A move that felt like an extreme punch to the gut of Celtics fans. I tell ya this much it pissed KG off to no end. It rubbed me the wrong way as well. Yet it was the Celtics who almost traded Ray the year prior. In 2013 Doc Rivers leaves the Celtics to Coach the LA Clippers. Trader Danny ends up shipping Paul and KG to Brooklyn. Cs end up with three number one picks. The end of yet another Era.
Danny goes out and finds Brad Stevens and names him the next Boston Celtics head coach. 2016 Celtics have the third pick and draft Jaylen Brown! I saw JB in Amherst and watched his very first dunks as a Celtic. Right then and there I knew we had a special player. I met Jerry Colangelo and he said JB wasn't even on their radar. Goes to show you some NBA guys know nothing. 2017 Celtics have the third pick and draft Jayson Tatum! A guy I watched in college and knew he would be special. I feel pretty lucky to have watched these two special young men grow. Now I get to write about them all the time.
Al Horford was the biggest free agent in Celtics history. For him to make a choice to come here was absolutely huge! I love you Al and hope you keep playing. During this episode we see the Celtics trade for Kyrie and sign Gordon Hayward. Unfortunately in this game Gordon Hayward broke his leg. Kylie ends up getting hurt in this same season. JB and JT lead this team to the Eastern Coference Finals! They pushed the Cavs all the way to seven games but end up losing in the end. The most incredible moment in that game was when JT dunked on Leflop.
2019 we see the Celtics healthy but in turmoil. Kyrie shows his true colors and eventually leaves the Cs. Gordon Hayward himself ends up leaving as a free agent. Danny Ainge is gone as GM. Brad takes over and hires Ime Udoka. 2022 Cs find a way to the Finals yet lose to the Warriors. A Series they were up in and should have won. Like a punch in the gut. In that off-season Ime gets suspended and Joe Mazzulla takes over. Joe is a guy who doesn't mince words and truly understands Celtic Pride.
Joe says he prayed to be the Celtics coach one day. Talk about dreams coming true... Unfortunately for Joe he ended up losing in seven games to the Heat that first year. A series in which they trailed 3-0 but couldn't come back all the way. In that game seven JT ended up hurt and JB played very poorly. Once again injuries cost the Celtics a chance at glory. John Havlicek passes away that same year. Bill Russell died not to long after that. Tommy passed, KC and Sam Jones as well. Even Bill Walton. So many former Celtics have died over the years and it's a reminder of life being short.
2024 Celtics have all the pieces for a recipe to a championship. JB, JT, Derrick and you add KP and Jrue to em. Here we go! This team played incredibly complete on both ends of the floor. Cs defeat the Heat and Cavs in five. Here we come ECFs vs the Indiana Pacers. Cs are down by three in game one. Cue JB from the corner BANG! Cs win in OT! Cs eventually sweep the series. Now it's on to the Mavs for Banner 18. Cs defeat the Mavs in five games and to me are one of the greatest teams I've ever seen given how dominant they were. Game five is a memory I will always cherish getting to watch it with my father and nephew. WE DID IT! WHAT THEY GONNA SAY NOW!
Bob Cousy got me crying with at 95 how important is was for him watch Banner 18 go to the rafters. The Celtics are a way of life!
