It's anybody's game in the East - Time for Celtics to separate from the pack

If the NBA was looking to establish balance in the League, it seems to have found it, at least in the Eastern Conference. One month into the 2020-21 season, the Philadelphia 76'ers sit in first place in the East with a 12-5 record, followed by 12 teams with a .400 record-or-better.

Only the Washington Wizards (3-8) and Detroit Pistons (3-13) sit below the .400 mark. Here are the rankings for the top-10 Eastern Conference teams.

In this morning's NBA TV broadcast, analyst Steve Smith labeled the Boston Celtics as a legitimate "contender" this season, while fellow-analyst, Channing Frye, pigeon-holed the Philadelphia 76'ers into the "pretender" category. Frye's argument was that Philly has yet to prove themselves in the heat of post-season battles.

So it's anybody's game in the Eastern Conference right now, and the Celtics with a full roster on the active list have the capacity to beat any team on any given night. That's assuming, of course, that the team's once-potent defense can be revived. Time for Boston to separate from the pack.

A sorrowful farewell to Kitty's Restaurant (North Reading, MA) as a family tradition

Wemby versus Kareem as rookies

We already know that the Spurs Victor Wembanyama is going to be an NBA phenomenon, but will he surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by the end of his career. It is highly likely. I did a "per-36-minutes" comparison between the two stars, mainly because Kareem logged 43.1 MPG in his rookie campaign - while Wemby has been held to only 29.4 MPG. Kareem: 24.1 PPG - 12.1 RPG - 3.4 APG - .518 FG - .653 FT Wemby: 25.9 PPG - 12.9 RPG - 4.5 APG - .463 FG - .796 FT No blocks, steals or 3-pointers were looked at since they were not tracked in Jabbar's first year in the NBA.
