The Jays have taken flight - as Brian Scabrine predicted

It was more than a year ago, in my one-on-one interview with Brian Scalabrine, that Scal was bubbling over with enthusiasm for the future of the Jays, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. When asked about the ceiling of the pair of wings, Brian did not hold back. Stopping short of equating any two players, he did suggest that Tatum had some of Kevin Durant in him, while Brown was similar to Michael Jordan in certain ways. Here are Scal's exact words from my interview:


"It'll be determined on Championships. Jayson can be Kevin Durant-ish. Jaylen can be - gosh - I hate using Michael Jordan, because I don't think he can be Michael Jordan -but the way he plays, and moves - and see how he jumps in the air - ever remember when Jordan would jump and and elevate, kind of float, keep the ball high in the air. Jaylen does that a lot. I hate doing that (Jordan comparison) - Jordan - best player ever - he (Jaylen) can be more of his version of Jordan - more catch-and-shoot - he has that defensive mentality - watch the way they both get in that defensive stance - both those guys (Jay-Team) have a tremendous upside - tremendous - more than anything, it's how hard they work - their mentality - at a young age I look at body and mentality - athleticism - both of those guys have a great head on their shoulders - not good, it's great - (now on Jayson's ceiling) - I always think MVP is always going to be an individual award - but I look at it like First Team All-NBA - if you're in that category, you're really doing something - I can see him flirting with that - I can see him like a Third-Team All-NBA this year - they have blown me away as far as how good they are - and their maturity."

I wrote earlier today that Jayson was most likely heading for his first All-Star game this season. His stat line for the season is a large part of that thinking (21.1 PPG/7.1 RPG/2.7 APG/1.5 SPG). Frankly, Jaylen's line is not far off from Tatum's (19.3 PPG/7.1 RPG/2.0 APG/1.3 SPG), and Brown is hitting 49% of his field goals and 36% on 3-pointers. And he has boosted his free throw percentage to 71%.




Scal did not compare the Jays with Lebron James in any sense, but this statistic does. Jaylen in his fourth season, and Jayson in his third, have not yet reached their ceiling. The best is yet to come.

A sorrowful farewell to Kitty's Restaurant (North Reading, MA) as a family tradition

  Time to say "Goodbye" to Kitty's Restaurant - my   family's destination and tradition for six generations and more than 80 years. My memories of Kitty's go back to the early-1950's . I would accompany my dad and grandfather on fishing trips to the Ipswich River in North Reading, Massachusetts - followed by a visit to the restaurant on Main Street. Wemby versus Kareem as rookies

 We already know that the Spurs Victor Wembanyama is going to be an NBA phenomenon, but will he surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by the end of his career. It is highly likely.  I did a "per-36-minutes" comparison between the two stars, mainly because Kareem logged 43.1 MPG in his rookie campaign - while Wemby has been held to only 29.4 MPG. Kareem: 24.1 PPG - 12.1 RPG - 3.4 APG - .518 FG - .653 FT Wemby:  25.9 PPG - 12.9 RPG - 4.5 APG - .463 FG - .796 FT No blocks, steals or 3-pointers were looked at since they were not tracked in Jabbar's first year in the NBA. It should also be noted that Kareem was 22 years old at the time, while Victor started at age 20. Two factors favoring Wembanyama ultimately surpassing Jabbar on any "Best-of-All-Time" charts are his point guard skills , shared by so many European players.  and the fact he is being mentored by Gregg Popovich.
