Marcus Smart, Carsen Edwards and Isaiah Thomas are Carson's Champions

If things went really wrong in the world, Marcus Smart is the guy I would want at my side. Well, things did go very wrong for my family after my grand daughter, Courtney Lane, with Cystic Fibrosis was denied a double-lung transplant by two Boston hospitals and quickly ferried off to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire to die.

Courtney was taken off life support and passed away at 4:30 P.M. on Friday, November 8, 2019. While I truly feel that two hospitals failed her, Courtney's medical team at Dartmouth-Hitchcock did not. She had been in their care for much of her life, and they were there at her death. The anger and grief that followed was pervasive for my family, but it didn't last.


My simple, but sincere, tweet on November 14, 2019 started it all. It was just a request to Rookie Carson Edwards to hopefully send a card to my great grandson, Carson Thomas Lane. My followers and readers took it from there. A flood of likes, retweets and comments followed, and then quickly came responses from Marcus Smart and Carsen Edwards.



Former-Celtic, Isaiah Thomas needs to be in the trio that I call Carson's Champions. Months ago, I sent a replica Isaiah-#4-jersey to be signed, telling Isaiah that it was for Carson. True to his word, he signed it and got it back to me. After the responses from Smart and Edwards, the flood gates released. I spent yesterday typing on the computer, trying to respond to as many well-wishers as possible. When my hands cramped up, my wife, Linda, took over typing duties.


My simple tweet request has gone viral, energized by my followers and strongly bolstered by the compassion of the Boston Celtics. The tears when I write this stuff are no longer those of grief and despair, but ones of joy - a vast difference. My family went from morose to joyous in a single day.


This story is not over. This is not an indictment of any specific medical institution, but it may be of a few individuals that should never have entered the medical profession. But that is all eclipsed right now by the many hundreds of people that cared enough to at least write a few words, and by several Celtics players that stepped forward to give hope to a beautiful 7-year-old boy whose mother was rejected by many in various ways.


Note: Carson is fortunate to have my daughter, Lisa, as his guardian, and Joshua Farrell as his surrogate, and very capable, dad. Carson has three Champions with Celtics connections and hundreds of others out there from all over the world. Things got very good for him in only a day. And they will get better.

A sorrowful farewell to Kitty's Restaurant (North Reading, MA) as a family tradition

  Time to say "Goodbye" to Kitty's Restaurant - my   family's destination and tradition for six generations and more than 80 years. My memories of Kitty's go back to the early-1950's .
