When Marcus Smart took a hit to the abdomen in yesterday's win over the New York Knicks, there were immediate flashbacks to last spring when Marcus suffered a torn left oblique that kept him out of action for roughly a month. The Knicks' Kevin Knox picked up an offensive foul on the play as Smart went down holding his left abdomen, the same area involved in his injury last April.
Smart's injury in April was quite severe. It was apparently not a simple tear in the muscle, but an evulsion of a portion of bone from the iliac crest. As I wrote at that time, the evulsion was an unusual injury that would require roughly 35 days of recovery.
We await further updates after medical tests are completed, and if Marcus is out of action for any significant time, the Celtics will have to find a way to overcome his loss as best they can. Here's hoping the injury is minor, but Smart can most likely use a few games off anyway. As a reminder of how hard Smart plays, he exerts so much effort on so many plays, his powerful muscle contractions may be at the root of his injuries. His April abdominal injury may have occurred in that manner, rather than a blow to his abdomen. The same may be true for this mishap. Let's hope the medical tests reveal no muscle tears. Stay with us for updates as they occur.

We can only hope this is not a repeat of Smart's oblique injury last spring that caused him to miss about one month.— Tom Lane (@CelticsSentinel) December 2, 2019
